How to transform your data into key decisions?

Nowadays Business Analytics technology is becoming a commodity, but few companies have engaged the necessary resources in developing further their systems, organizations and processes and in ensuring those resources serve the benefit of taking the right decision at the right moment.

No doubt that cleansing your data, structuring your reporting portfolio, developing a decision architecture using the available data, defining key performance indicators, putting in place a data governance model will help you to achieve your operational, tactical and strategic measures.

Closing the decision loop by reviewing metrics, generating insights, executing the plans, assessing the added value and monitoring the overall business performance in order to review again the metrics is the right way to go.

morphollis  can help you out on that path…

Our Approach

One key element that differentiates consulting companies is their ability to promote internally a way of working and to ensure their consultants all apply the same way of working.  The challenge is on one hand to ensure that the next steps are known by everyone, and on the other hand that the documentation of the whole process does not come as a burden on the project deliverables.

morpholligence has been built on the ASAP methodology for BI promoted by SAP amongst their partners.  It can be adapted to the needs of your company and make sure that the execution and operations of the project are well managed while keeping documentation up to date, and risk and scope under control.

morpholligence provides work products and deliverables to every stage of a project along its life cycle.  It organizes the project in a number of phases, stages and steps, with roles, activities, best practices documents and pre-defined deliverables.

Implementation Roadmap

Our References

[ Infrabel ]
Railways Infrastruture, Saint-Gilles (Belgium)
Multiple BI Projects including BW on HANA migration, SAP BO conversion and Power BI rollout
The assignment started with a dual role: on one the one hand, coordinating BI activities across a team of 10-25 BI Designers, on the other hand, a conversion from BEx Analyzer to SAP BO reporting portfolio.  This was followed by a migration of the SAP BW database to SAP HANA, and the development of custom solutions using HANA views.  Finally following the SAP change of strategy, the Lumira tools were replaced by Power BI, and Power BI rolled out across the organisation.

[ KONE International ]
Mechanical Industry, Kraainem (Belgium)
Multiple BI Projects, SAP Netweaver BI implementation
The central piece of reporting solutions, called Rush, was developed from scratch on a SAP NetWeaver BI 700 platform.  Rush as the most complex corporate reporting solution was used by Kone to report their financial results worldwide.   The reporting solution existed initially on a SAP ERP platform and was used by all KONE entities to monitor the sales of new elevators, escalators, doors,… , the maintenance of the existing ones and the customer profitability.  The application uses data from the CO, SD, PM, PS and CS modules.  Because the application was so critical for the business, the new solution had to be designed and implemented in a limited time frame, but also with limited resources. The reporting solution was split into 4 reporting areas, the data model of each area consisted of a dozen custom info cubes gathering data from many custom DSOs using a multi-layer architecture. On top of the reporting solution, new solutions were built using info sets and multi providers.

[ Fortis Bank ]
Banking Industry, Brussels (Benelux)
Enhancement, maintenance & support of Benelux SAP systems
Application maintenance services for the Benelux organizations in the following domains: Human Resources, Finance & Controlling, Materials Management & Real Estate, included mid-sized development projects. The systems landscape consisted of two SAP R/3 4.6C tracks, one for Belux, one for the Netherlands with two SAP BW 3.1 tracks, one for Belux and again one for the Netherlands, both of those using Business Objects 6.51 as reporting tool.  Delivery of estimate sheets, functional & technical design documents of all developments. Analysis and resolution of production incidents in a wide variety of functional and technical areas.  BI team consisted of 3 BW FTEs located offshore, 3 BW FTE and 1 BO FTE all located in Belgium.

Our Services

Statements of Work

Ad Hoc Services

An ad hoc request is a scoped piece of work that must be:

  1. Clearly defined, by means of a functional specification document, and
  2. Well estimated using a predefined agreed matrix.

Application

An ad hoc request may be used when the work to be delivered can be accurately estimated at the time of placing the request. Any change to the original request requires a new estimate and a new pricing.

Pricing

Ad hoc requests are estimated according to an agreed complexity matrix that takes into account the type of development and the complexity of the development. Criteria should be in place to categorize the complexity.

Cases

This type of contract would likely be used for work that do not exceed 15 days and can be split into clearly identified pieces:

  • ABAP programs, including reports, download/upload programs
  • Enhancements, user-exits, BADIs
  • BI extractors, info providers, info objects, process chains
  • BI queries
  • LSMW objects

Time & Materials

A time & materials contract provides for acquiring services and/or products on the basis of:

  1. Direct labor hours at specified fixed hourly rates that include wages, overhead, general and administrative expenses, and profit; and
  2. Materials at cost, including, if appropriate, material handling costs as part of material costs.

Application

A time-and-materials contract may be used only when it is not possible at the time of placing the contract to estimate accurately the extent or duration of the work or to anticipate costs with any reasonable degree of confidence.

Pricing

Such contracts use a fixed hourly rate, and are based on 8 hours per day work during the total length of the contracts. The number of days per week and/or month is determined upfront but can vary between contracts.

Cases

This type of contract would likely be used for work estimated upfront to cover the duration of the contract:

  • ABAP development end-to-end
  • SAP enhancement end-to-end
  • BI development end-to-end
  • Data Migration end-to-end

Package

A package contract is a convenient way for acquiring support services with following limitations:

  1. Hours are purchased in advanced.
  2. Support does not apply to business critical systems (except clearly stated in the contract).

Application

A package contract is a variation of a time-and-materials contract. However no end date is promised and hours are not necessary spent continuously and by means of full days.

Pricing

Such contracts use a fixed hourly rate by chunks of hours, i.e. the more hours are purchased, and the cheaper the hourly price is.

Cases

This type of contract would likely be used for support activities:

  • Jobs monitoring
  • Process chain monitoring
  • Performance monitoring

Our Solutions

Information Management

?

Information management helps you to cleanse, manage and distribute your structured and unstructured data across your company in order to deliver accurate and integrated data in a timely fashion.

Activities in this domain involve data cleansing, data migration, data management and data integration.

Business Intelligence

Our reporting solutions combine the design and development of:

We also can offer basic Business Objects consultancy services for reporting and creation of universes in relation or not to the SAP NetWeaver BI product.

The below gives an idea of what solutions can be proposed for the Reporting area (Data Warehouse).

Base assumptions

  1. Reporting Data Model is available and understood by the client
  2. Logical Data Models are described in detail and each object has been defined
  3. Blueprint corresponds to the time required for reviewing the Data Models, proposing the Data Flows, the Data Architecture and listing all objects required to build the solution
  4. Realization is the time necessary to build each object and the time necessary to perform unit testing with the data available in the Development system
  5. Final Preparation corresponds to the time necessary to perform testing of the objects during integration and user acceptance testing ; this is usually a guess figure that heavily depends on the client involvement, and assumes that only a quick review of the objects is performed before promoting the solution to the Production environment.

Complexity factors

The complexity factors for Business Intelligence solutions depend on whether the objects are activated from the standard Business Content, from the enhancements that might be required on top of the activation of the Business Contents or from the fact that the objects have to be custom-designed and built. Important criteria can be listed but heavily depend on the object itself:

  1. Number of attributes of an info object
  2. Hierarchy to be loaded
  3. Time dependency
  4. Number of info objects in the DSOs or in the info cubes
  5. Number of objects to be linked in info sets
  6. Complexity of the Reporting Data Model
  7. Number of dimensions in the info cubes
  8. Use of aggregates
  9. Use of multi-providers
  10. Selection on custom built data sources
  11. Creation of delta-enabled data sources
  12. Inventory-type scenarios using non cumulative key figures
  13. Number of formulas/selections used on the queries to be built
  14. Use of the cells editor to create queries
  15. Jump target functionality to other queries or to SAP ERP transactions
  16. Time dependency in the process chains
  17. Use of custom programs to enable custom logic

Estimation metrics

Estimation metrics for BI solutions are based on the following complexity factors:

morphollis has developed its own estimation metrics per object in order to assess the work required from design up until unit testing of the reporting solution.

For instance, the metrics for info object is:

Complexity / Development Type Phase Hours
SBC Blueprint 0.25
SBC Realization 0.00
SBC Final Preparation 0.25
EBC Blueprint 0.25
EBC Realization 0.25
EBC Final Preparation 0.25
CBL Blueprint 0.50
CBL Realization 0.50
CBL Final Preparation 0.25
CBM Blueprint 1.00
CBM Realization 1.00
CBM Final Preparation 0.50
CBH Blueprint 2.00
CBH Realization 1.00
CBH Final Preparation 0.25

The below gives an idea of what solutions can be proposed for the Reporting area (ERP System).

Base assumptions

  1. Reporting Data Model is available and understood by the client
  2. Logical Data Model used is provided by the SAP ERP system ; custom tables are included in the overall Logical Data Model
  3. Blueprint corresponds to the time required for reviewing the custom elements of the Data Model, understanding the business processes that generate the data to be reported, proposing a selection path for each set of data and listing all objects required to build the solution

The complexity factors for ABAP reports are classified in the usual 3 categories Low, Medium and High. In some cases, standard SAP programs can be used as base for the custom development. Important criteria can be listed but heavily depend on each solution:

  1. Number of underlying tables to be considered
  2. Number of the modules used to deliver the required data
  3. Use of ALV grid techniques
  4. Update or only selection of data
  5. Availability of standard function modules or BAPI to perform the operations
  6. Logic to be implemented to get all required data

Estimation metrics

morphollis has developed its own estimation metrics per type of report in order to assess the work required from design up until unit testing of the reporting solution.

For instance, the metrics for a report is:

Complexity / Development Type Phase Hours
Low Blueprint 8.00
Low Realization 8.00
Low Final Preparation 2.00
Medium Blueprint 24.00
Medium Realization 24.00
Medium Final Preparation 4.00
High Blueprint 40.00
High Realization 40.00
High Final Preparation 24.00
